Subspecies
There are 2 recognised races of Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo, with a third recognised by some ornithologists.
C.f. funereus
The nominate subspecies. Includes the population from its northern most range in central QLD, through NSW and around to eastern Victoria to the Gippsland region.
C.f. xanthanotus
Loosely begins between Gippsland and Melbourne and extends west through Victoria to South Australia. Also includes Tasmania, Kangaroo Island and the Bass Strait Islands of King, Flinders and Cape Barren. This race is somewhat smaller than the nominate race including a shorter wingspan, shorter tail and narrower and shorter beak.
C.f. whiteae
A third race recognised by some. Western Victoria and the south east of South Australia including on the Eyre Peninsula, which is considered a critically endangered population.
